Points
Every child who finishes a race or a field event will earn points for their school.
Points are awarded on a sliding scale – the higher up the finish order you are the more points you win.
Points are balanced out across events, such that for any event group (eg. Y6B 600m, or Y6B Relay, or Y6B Jump, or Y6B Hurdles Race1+2) the maximum points a school can obtain is the same, about 90 points.
Small schools that do not enter their full quota of athletes receive balanced default points so as not to be left at a disadvantage.
-
If a school only fields one competitor in an event, the "missing" athlete receives a score based on the result of the actual competitor. For example, Runner one wins the sprint and earns 45 points. If no other runner from that school took part, the school would receive 30 points for their "second" athlete, giving a total of 75 points.
-
If a school fails to enter any athlete they earn points equivalent to one point less than the last place score. For example, a school with no athlete in the Y4B sprint will receive 2 x 16 points.
Points are accumulated, and then a multiplier is applied to balance out school sizes. The multiplier is based on the actual scores the schools achieved at Area Sports in 2009:
-
The winning score from 2009 was 2324 points.
-
This figure is divided by the school’s own score from 2009 to give the multiplier.
-
The school’s score in 2011 is the number of points accumulated times the multiplier, with the decimal places truncated.
-
If schools have the same total, decimal places are taken into consideration.
For example:
-
Sandhills score 1500 points.
-
Their adjusted score = 1500 x 2324/2142 = 1627.4509 points.
-
This is truncated to 1627 points (and decimal places are used if there is a tie).
-
The multiplier table is shown below:
| Lane | School | Multiplier in full | Multiplier (shown to 3 dp) |
| 1 | John Watson | ||
| 2 | Sandhills | 2342/2142 | 1.085 |
| 3 | Garsington | 2324/2292 | 1.014 |
| 4 | Horspath | 2324/2022 | 1.149 |
| 5 | Little Milton | 2324/1994 | 1.165 |
| 6 | Great Milton | 2324/2324 | 1.000 |
| 7 | Beckley | 2324/2246 | 1.035 |
| 8 | Marsh Baldon | 2324/1888 | 1.231 |
