Events

GENERAL RULES:

  1. The field events will be taking place at the same time as the sprints and hurdles. Parents will be able to move around the outside of the stadium (keeping outside the blue rail) to watch at the long jump pit and throwing bay.

  2. Two competitors per event per Year Group per gender. E.g. two Y6 boys from each school in the Y6 boys sprint, and two Y6 girls in the girls sprint. Three competitors per school can run in the 600m as there is space over that distance which gives us an opportunity to give extra children a chance to compete.

  3. Relays require 4 per Year Group per gender. Flexibility for small schools to amalgamate year groups upwards if required, such as a Y5 running in the Y6 relay team – but not a Y6 running in the Y5 team).

  4. The Cannonball relay requires one Y4G, Y4B, Y5G, Y5B, Y6G and Y6B (six athletes per team).

  5. Each individual running event (eg. Y4G 60m sprint through to Y6B hurdles) will be run over two races – with one athlete per school in each race. Thus each school is represented in each race.

  6. Every child who finishes his/her race will win points for their school.

    1. Points are awarded on a sliding scale – the higher up the finish order you are the more points you win.

    2. Points are balanced out across events, such that for any event group (eg. Y6B 600m, or Y6B Relay, or Y6B Jump, or Y6B Hurdles Race1+2) the maximum points a school can obtain is the same, 90 points.

    3. Small schools which do not enter their full quota of athletes receive balanced default points so as not to be left at a disadvantage.

  7. The top 3 in each race/event will be presented with medals immediately after the event. We’ll have the children on a podium facing the stand, and their school announced over the speaker system. This is a fast moving ceremony, as each sprint and hurdles race must run and complete in two minutes.

  8. There are no rules on how many times a child can compete, but please enter the spirit of the event and allow as many children to take part as they wish rather than use stars for multiple events. However, there is this practical rule:

    1. Children cannot take part in two field events (as they are running at the same time).

    2. Take care and try and avoid having a child up for a track race at the same time as being in a field event. The later will start at the same time as the first sprint race, and should finish in time for the 300m race.

  9. Schools will be allocated lanes for the entire evening.

  10. Each child will run with a number – the number will be three digits. The first digit is the lane/school number. The next two digits are smaller and uniquely identify the child within the school. For example, Garsington School is drawn in lane 3, so each Garsington child will have the number 3xx pinned on the front of their top. There is an example below:

The number shown is for a child from Garsington School (lane 3) whose unique number is 18. Competitor's number worn on front As backup in case of lost numbers please write the number on the back of the children’s hands thus: Back up number written on hand

  11. Each school will be given 50 numbers and a bag of safety pins.

  12. Each number should be attached to the child’s top with four pins – one in each corner.

  13. The child’s number gets written onto the event card at the time the children are taken to the start by the Event Chief, and is recorded by the line judges at the finish.

  14. Children will be stationed on the grass area in pens with pen numbers to match their lane numbers.

  15. The Event Chiefs will come to the bays and collect the nominated athlete from each school. The athlete needs to be ready – number on, laces tied, and knowing what they are doing.

  16. The Event Chief takes them to the appropriate holding area for the event, where they are briefed and held ready to be moved promptly on to the start line.

  17. After their event the children return to their school bay.

  18. The team scores will be announced at the end of the evening. This will be done by the nominated Head teacher. He/she will be with a technical announcer and a results person, and all three will be in the cabin at the side of the track
